A SHOCKING video showing the dangers of young children wearing thick winter coats in car seats has emerged online as a warning to parents.

A safety group has issued the footage to demonstrate how loose car straps can be when a child is all wrapped up in a winter coat. 

The video by Good Egg Safety said: ”In a collision, the harness isn’t as close to your child’s body as it needs to be to allow it to properly restrain them.”

In an official crash test lab in Michigan, US, a small dummy that appears to be securely strapped into a child car seat comes hurtling out as it crashes at speeds of 30mph. 

A girl is also shown wearing a puffy jacket as she is tightly strapped in to the car seat.

But as soon as she takes off her coat, it becomes apparent how dangerously loose the car seat strap is. 

The warning to parents comes after a father’s Facebook post, which showed photos of how loose a child’s car straps can be when wearing a coat, went viral. 

The post, which was shared more than 120,000 times, said: “Thick winter coats and car seats do not mix!

“In a crash, the winter coat will become compressed and allow your child to be ejected from the car seat through the obvious slack in the restraints.

“Try warming up your car before hand, or just putting the coat over them as a blanket, after you have buckled them in. #‎keepallthebabiessafe.”
