Storm Eva is threatening to bring more misery to Cumbria over the Christmas period, with further heavy rain and flooding expected.

yellow warning for northern England has been issued for Christmas Day evening and “lasting through much of Boxing Day”.

Weather forecasters say rain could be persistent and heavy, with the danger of more floods in the region, which is still recovering from Storm Desmond earlier this month.

Homes and businesses in at least two Cumbria villages have been flooded again this week.

Appleby was deluged by three to four feet of water after the River Eden burst its banks, forcing more people to leave their homes.

The Glenridding Hotel, near Ullswater, was also under two feet of water – the third time it has been breached this month.

It said on Facebook staff were “feeling deflated” after the latest deluge.

Firefighters in Cumbria were called to eight flooding incidents on Tuesday, including the rescue of a 70-year-old woman.

It came a day after Prince Charles met victims of the previous floods, which insurers have said will leave them with a bill for £520m.

The Environment Agency has issued six flood warnings – meaning “immediate action required” – for northwest England, around rivers including the Eden, Eamont and the Dee.

Eleven more flood warnings are in force in the North East and four in Wales, while 67 “flooding is possible” amber alerts have also been issued.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “We are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further flood alerts and warnings if required.”

Cumbria Polce are urging motorists on the road over Christmas to “adapt their driving style” and be aware of changing conditions.

“Please do not in any circumstance ignore road closure signs and continue on your journey,” said Chief Inspector Matt Kennerley

“Driving through flood water is extremely dangerous as you cannot determine the depth.”

Some areas could be blasted by high winds overnight into Christmas Eve, with 60mph gales possible in parts of Wales and Scotland.

Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: “Tonight, the heavy rain will spread eastwards across Ireland, Scotland, northern England, Wales and southwest England.

“High rainfall totals are expected, especially for southwest Scotland and parts of northwest England, leading to localised flooding.”

Christmas Day itself will still be unseasonably mild in most parts of the country with temperatures of around 13C.
